The glossary of terms in “Words of Warehousing” by K. B. Ackerman defines a distribution center as a “facility from which wholesale and retail orders are filled” and adds, “the term is used to describe a high-velocity operation as opposed to a static storage warehouse.”
Distribution centers have unique requirements that differ from other static warehousing operations. While a static warehouse’s priorities concentrate on the most efficient, cost effective way to store inventory, their operations have very little consideration for customer service. A distribution center focuses on providing fast, accurate and exceptional service to its customers.
A distribution center’s customers may be their own company’s internal divisions or external customers, such as retailers, wholesalers, or even consumers. So a distribution center’s business operations are driven by their customers’ requirements. As the principal link between suppliers and customers, a distribution center’s management must understand not only their customers’ needs, but also the most efficient and cost-effective methods to meet those needs.
